Fort Worth resident rocker extraordinare Austin Allsup shouldn’t even be here. His father, grammy winning Bob Wills & the Texas Playboy producer Tommy Allsup, more famously known as guitar player of the Lubbock, Texas band the Crickets, gave up his seat to Richie Valens in the movie “La Bamba” and with it music history was made. Austin, who has lived in his father’s shadow since the start of his career 4 years ago, has finally overcome his demons and moved on down the road, making a name for himself every time he opens his mouth to sing.

With vocal talent that makes American Idol winners look lame in comparison, Austin is currently enjoying the release of his sophmore album, “Crying Out Loud” (2009, Smith Entertainment). His guitar mentor and studio partner, Mike McClure, has certainly made his mark with Oklahoma Red Dirt kings Cross Canadian Ragweed. With this being the second album produced by McClure, it is very safe to say that Austin might be Texas’ newest star in the making.

Ryan McBride shouldn’t even be able to play music. After graduating from Saginaw’s Boswell High in 2003 and his only goal being to tour the nation singing his songs, Ryan has had a rollercoaster ride of an introduction to life as a musician. With a back injury that almost paralyzed him, and the death of his best friend and brother Colton in 2008, it has been a rocky start for McBride. Urged on by his friends and family, Ryan went into the studio in 2008 with Joey Green & Fort Worth Sound’s Bart Rose and created an album that will go down as one of Fort Worth’s best in 2009.

Quicksand, featuring Ryan’s grungy vocal delivery and fresh alternative-country licks, found the ear of Fort Worth record label impressario Ricky Smith Jr so much, that he signed him to his record label (Smith Entertainment ) on the spot. Now under the wings and mentoring of Smith, his own personal demons behind him, and currently writing material for his Sophmore album, be on the lookout for this young singer/songwriter to have a breakout year rising the ranks on the Texas touring circuit in 2010.

Joey Green. Most everyone that considers themselves a Fort Worth underground music fan has seen this guy play Fort Worth’s dives and honkytonks for years. Always as the little pudgy kid that could sing with the best of them, but had a few too many jagers. After 9+ years of honing his craft, as well as becoming obsessed with studio production alongside his good friend, mentor and Fort Worth Sound studio guru, Bart Rose, this 27 year old is now a sight to behold. Touring over 180+ shows a year, enjoying massive success on the college circuit across Texas and Oklahoma, Joey and his band not only are rocking the highways, but making genre bending records in the studio. His 2008 album “Vinyl Destination” (2008, Smith Entertainment) helped paved much of this newfound success, with it’s searing pop-rock-meets-Johnson County-Country-Rock melodies. Touring with Texas Music’s newest crop of stars like Casey Donahew, Kyle Bennett, and Bart Crow, haven’t hurt either.

With the release of Joey’s new studio album, “Whatever Lady?!” (on Fort Worth indie upstart Winding Road Music), Joey brings us the softer side to his country rocker persona. What started as an acoustic, hand played instrumental EP turned into an album hand arranged by Joey and already enjoying massive radio success on Texas radio with the breakout hit, “Natchitoches Blues”.

With these 3 talented artists playing the FW Weekly’s 2009 Reader’s Choice winner for best music venue, Lola’s on 6th, we ask one last time ask how you could go wrong….? We won’t even mention that it’s Free, that would almost be like stealing… and we all know real music fans don’t do that!
